Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch show off their bruised post UFC-155 faces

Junior dos Santos and Tim Boetsch both walked away from UFC 155 with losses. They also walked away with seriously, seriously beat-up faces, as shown in this picture from the hospital.

UFC president Dana White originally suggested that dos Santos suffered a broken jaw from his five-round, title loss to Cain Velasquez, but tests reportedly came back negative. Boetsch had a huge cut during his loss to Costa Philippou, which is pretty easy to find in the above picture.

flormcavoy: Tips for B2B Sales Online | Personable Follow Up Tools ...

Selling business to business (B2B) through online tools can be extremely difficult. The internet if full of slimy scams that make you look bad when you are simply contacted by someone online, asking about their current services or products related to your business. The prospect wonders if you are simply a robot that sent this email out to a bazillion of prospects hoping that a sliver percent respond. Cutting through the spam clutter is difficult but possible using a few methods.

Personalize the Email & Offer Value

In my business of selling website services I come across a lot of ugly websites. This encourages me to reach out to the owner of the business in order to?esquire?about what on earth they are thinking?! A simple email is a great way to reach them and supplies basic information for them to consider. As long as you send them a personal email you won?t be marked automatically as spam. However, when the prospect receives the email they possibly will classify you in their own minds as spam. One way to assure them you are not spam is to start the email with a personalized message. ?Hey Mike, I was in your restaurant eating last week?the meatloaf tasted awesome?and I noticed you needed [insert service]??

It?s also important to take some time give them something they find valuable. If you sell business insurance, put some basic tips that are related to their business and how you see they are lacking. I generally put together an analysis video of their website so they can watch and learn a few quick tips about why their website isn?t functioning as they might think. Much of the information I give them they could do on their own.

This might seem like ?a lot of preparation simply to contact one prospect. At times this is true but it sure beats getting caught in a spam filter and never have a chance to begin with.

Follow Up With a Phone Call

Follow up to make sure they realize you are human. I generally send a follow up email after my initial email and if they don?t respond I give them a call on the phone. I can?t count the times I have called someone and asked, ?Did you get a chance to review my email?? They then apologize because they thought I was spam. This gives them confidence to look through my email and consider the information.

Last Resort: Sent a Personalized Postcard

Many times I email a prospect and get no response. I send a follow up email?no response. I give them a call and get pushed to their voice mail again and again?no response. At this point I have put a lot of effort into contacting this person so I want to make sure I take every opportunity to let them know I am wanting to help them. The best last resort is to send a card in the mail. There are great services out there for this. The one I use is SendOutCards.com. You can do it all online and they make it simple. I generally send a postcard with a picture of their website on the front. This gets their attention when it comes with a stack of mail coupons and bills. Just yesterday I had a prospect (that I had already given up on) call me and say they got my postcard and apologized for not responding sooner.

Obama says failure to reach fiscal deal would hurt markets

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Financial markets would be affected adversely if U.S. lawmakers fail to agree on a "fiscal cliff" deal before Tuesday, President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast on Sunday, while urging Congress to act quickly to extend tax cuts for middle-class Americans.

Lawmakers are seeking a last-minute deal that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to start within days. If Congress does not make that happen, the first bill brought up in the new year would be to reduce taxes for middle-income families, Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Now I think that over the next 48 hours, my hope is that people recognize that, regardless of partisan differences, our top priority has to be to make sure that taxes on middle-class families do not go up. That would hurt our economy badly," Obama said in the interview taped on Saturday.

"We can get that done. Democrats and Republicans both say they don't want taxes to go up on middle-class families. That's something we all agree on. If we can get that done, that takes a big bite out of the 'fiscal cliff.' It avoids the worst outcomes," Obama added.

Low income tax rates first put in place under Republican former President George W. Bush are due to expire at the end of the day on Monday - the last day of 2012.

Obama said that failing to reach a deal would have a negative impact on financial markets.

"If people start seeing that on January 1st this problem still hasn't been solved, that we haven't seen the kind of deficit reduction that we could have had had the Republicans been willing to take the deal that I gave them ... then obviously that's going to have an adverse reaction in the markets," he said.

RARE SENATE SESSION ON SUNDAY

Obama met with congressional leaders at the White House on Friday and declared himself cautiously optimistic about the chances of an agreement, but he noted in the interview that nothing had materialized since then.

"I was modestly optimistic yesterday, but we don't yet see an agreement. And now the pressure's on Congress to produce," he said.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a rare Sunday session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have fiscal-cliff legislation to act upon.

Obama sketched out what he believed to be the most likely scenarios the end the back-and-forth between both sides. Either the congressional leaders would come up with a deal, or Democrats in the Senate would bring a bill to the floor seeking an up-or-down vote to extend tax cuts for middle income earners.

"And if all else fails, if Republicans do in fact decide to block it, so that taxes on middle class families do in fact go up on January 1st, then we'll come back with a new Congress on January 4th and the first bill that will be introduced on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families," he said.

Obama chided Republicans for resisting his call for tax rates to go up for the top two percent of U.S. earners despite what he viewed as significant compromises on his part to cut spending and reform expensive social programs for the poor and elderly.

"They say that their biggest priority is making sure that we deal with the deficit in a serious way, but the way they're behaving is that their only priority is making sure that tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are protected. That seems to be their only overriding, unifying theme," Obama said.

"The offers that I've made to them have been so fair that a lot of Democrats get mad at me. I mean I offered to make some significant changes to our entitlement programs in order to reduce the deficit," he said.

Whole lotta love for Heart's 'Stairway to Heaven'

By Rolling Stone

Heart showed a whole lotta love for Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center Honors, which aired Dec. 26, with a spot-on performance of (what else?) "Stairway to Heaven."

With Jason Bonham, the son of Zep's late, original drummer John Bonham, manning the skins, the Wilson sisters cranked out the classic alongside a small orchestra and choir that had Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones nodding in approval, not to mention some minor headbanging from President Obama right before the solo kicked in.

Rebels extend reach in Central African Republic ahead of peace talks

BANGUI (Reuters) - Rebels in Central African Republic took control of a strategic town north of the capital on Saturday after soldiers defending it withdrew, ramping up tensions ahead of planned peace talks.

The three-week-old uprising by SELEKA rebels poses the biggest threat yet to President Francois Bozize's near ten-year rule over the former French colony - a nation plagued by poverty and turmoil despite its rich natural resources.

Regional neighbors agreed on Friday to send more troops to shore up CAR's army after a string of defeats and after French President Francois Hollande rejected a plea for military help made by embattled President Francois Bozize.

Insurgents riding motorbikes and packed into pickup trucks streamed into Sibut, a regional capital on a major crossroads about 190 kilometers (115 miles) north of the capital Bangui, unopposed early on Saturday, said witnesses.

"(They) took positions at strategic points in the town, firing their guns," said Yvon Bema, a 27-year-old Sibut resident who fled to Bangui. "The national army and the Chadians had left on Friday in the direction of Bangui," he added.

The land around Sibut had been seen as a buffer between the rebels and Bangui. Government troops there were backed by soldiers from neighboring Chad.

CAR's minister of territorial administration, Josue Binoua, confirmed on local radio that Sibut was occupied by rebels after troops withdrew to Damara, about 75 km north of Bangui, where clashes had been reported on Friday.

The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) - which already has more than 500 peacekeepers in CAR - announced overnight a decision to send in more troops ahead of talks planned between the rebels and the government in early January.

"We are thinking of a way to deploy this mission as quickly as possible," Gabon Foreign Minister Emmanuel Issoze Ngondet told reporters after a meeting with his regional counterparts in Gabon's capital Libreville. He did not say how many soldiers would be deployed.

The ECCAS soldiers, mostly from Chad, are part of the MICOPAX (Mission for the Consolidation of Peace in Central African Republic) peacekeeping force.

The SELEKA rebels have threatened to overthrow Bozize if he does not honour a previous peace deal offering former fighters pay and jobs. They have said they will stay out of Bangui for now to give peace talks a chance.

Officials in Bangui said on Friday rebels had agreed to send delegates to Libreville in early January, though a rebel spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

Bozize came to power in a rebellion in 2003 and has since won two elections. France launched air strikes against rebels challenging him in 2006, but Paris has said it will not intervene militarily in the current conflict.

The United States said on Thursday it had closed its embassy in Bangui and evacuated its staff.

Central African Republic is one of a number of countries in the region where U.S. Special Forces are helping local forces try to track down the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group which has killed thousands of civilians across four African nations.

About 1,200 French nationals live in CAR, mostly working for mining firms and aid groups in the capital. French defense ministry sources said Paris had sent in 150 troops to Bangui late on Friday to bolster an existing 250-strong deployment safeguarding French citizens.

French nuclear energy group Areva mines the Bakouma uranium deposit in CAR's south - France's biggest commercial interest in its former colony.

Space spider dies in D.C. after surviving 55 days in space

Space spider dies in D.C.: Neffi survived 55 days aboard the International Space Station. But the famous spider died after four days in the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, D.C.

Nefertiti, a spider that traveled 42 million miles through space before returning to Earth in October, died after being sent to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The experiment was designed to determine if a spider dependent on gravity for catching its meals would be able to adapt and eat in micro gravity.

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

According to the Boulder Daily Camera , the spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station. The spider managed to survive despite a miscalculation on the amount of food needed for the mission.

The Johnson jumping spider (species Phidippus johnsoni). arrived at the Smithsonian's Insect Zoo this past Thursday. By, Monday it had expired.

The Boulder Daily Camera reported:

"Neffi, of a species that typically enjoys a lifespan of about one year, was 10 months old. Monday's passing of the so-called "spidernaut," according to the Smithsonian, was due to natural causes. However, the Smithsonian conceded that no necropsy was performed on the deceased arachnid.

The experiment that made Neffi famous was conceived as part of the NASA-sponsored YouTube Space Lab contest in which two student-proposed studies were selected from thousands submitted worldwide by video. Amr Mohamed, 18, of Egypt, suggested examining whether a spider normally dependent on gravity for catching its meals would be able to adapt, and eat, in a micro-gravity environment."

According to NASA, Mohamed's project was designed to look at whether jumping spiders, like the zebra and red-backed species, can adapt their hunting abilities to microgravity. Jumping spiders do not build webs for catching their food. These particular spiders hunt using their excellent vision to track and stalk prey, jumping and striking with a lethal bite -- similar to cats hunting mice.
?

?"I have always been fascinated by science because with a handful of equations, I can explain the world around me," said Mohamed in his Meet the Winner YouTube video. "The idea of sending an experiment to space is the most exciting thing that I have ever heard in my life."

Eventually, Mohamed's experiment was designed by Colorado University. It demonstrated that a spider was able to hunt down fruit flies in her sealed space environment on the International Space Station just fine -- until her food supply ran out, explained Stefanie Countryman, the projects manager for K-12 Educational Projects at CU's BioServe Space Technologies.

Snowstorm buries parts of U.S. Northeast, flights canceled

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A powerful winter storm that has dumped a foot of snow on parts of the United States forced the cancellation of 457 flights on Thursday and threatened more havoc as it hit the New England states with fierce winds.

The heaviest snow was falling on Pennsylvania, New York and New England, and winter storm warnings continued over a majority of the U.S. Northeast, the National Weather Service said.

The massive storm system touched off tornadoes in the South and produced snow in Texas before barreling down on the densely populated Northeast.

The service forecast 12 to 18 inches of snow for northern New England after the storm moved northeast out of the lower Great Lakes, where it left more than a foot of snow on parts of Michigan.

The storm front was accompanied by freezing rain and sleet, creating hazards on the highways and at airports.

A Southwest Airlines jet skidded off the runway at Long Island MacArthur Airport, about 50 miles east of New York City, as it taxied for takeoff, Suffolk County police said.

None of the 134 people aboard Tampa-bound flight No. 4695 was injured, police said.

"It's been undetermined at this time if weather was a factor," a police spokeswoman said.

Snow was due to fall in northern New York, Vermont and New Hampshire at up to 2 inches an hour, with winds gusting to 30 miles per hour (48 km per hour), the weather agency said.

So far, 457 U.S. airline flights scheduled for Thursday had been canceled, according to FlightAware.com, a website that tracks flights.

American Airlines had the most canceled at 55. A total of about 1,500 U.S. flights were canceled on Wednesday.

New York state activated its Emergency Operations Center late on Wednesday to deal with the first major storm of the season.

Governor Andrew Cuomo warned the heads of seven utilities they would be held accountable for their performances. Utilities near New York City were criticized for lingering outages after Superstorm Sandy devastated the region in October.

New York state has seen little snow during autumn and winter. Buffalo, New York, was 23 inches below normal for the season before the storm, said Bill Hibbert, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

"We're short and even this big snow isn't going to make it up for us," he said.

The storm dumped record snow in north Texas and Arkansas before it swept through the U.S. South on Christmas Day and then veered north.

The system spawned tornadoes and left almost 200,000 people in Arkansas and Alabama without power on Wednesday.

At least five people were killed in road accidents related to the bad weather, police said.

Italian For Kids: Reasons Why It's Best To Start Young

Mastering a different language is a thing that most adults struggle with. Nevertheless, for young children, the process is almost instant; since children?s brains are rapidly expanding and are wired to absorb details in order to learn about their ? new world ?, they just have to be given simple instructions to know the basic principles of a language- more often than not, being together with adults in conversation can be more than enough to teach a child.

Openness to studying and easy acquisition of details are among the key reasons why instructing new languages is best done while a person is still very young. Actually, kids are so skilled at learning new different languages they can pick up even the most subtle differences in tones that most grown ups often miss. This ability allows youngsters to achieve a natural-sounding accent that can be hardly distinguished from the ones from native speakers!

Along with achieving more natural accents, teaching new languages while a kid is still young can certainly help enhance mental skills as well as help children have a much better grasp of their native language. As an example, mastering Italian for kids can help them fully understand English better. For the reason that the Italian dialect is definitely a close relative of Latin, an old language from which many English terms originate from. Apart from boosting word knowledge, children may study grammar better by assessing grammar guidelines of one dialect with another. This can help them discover the similarities and differences between languages, an exercise which will certainly only serve to expand their comprehension of communication rules. Using a much better grasp of these rules can help a child communicate his thoughts better.

Another reason why it?s better to start foreign language classes early is it can help widen a child?s viewpoint on the modern world as well as allow them to have an even better understanding for different ethnicities. For instance, kids who understand how to speak a foreign language fluently will be more at ease if they ever visit the country since they won?t be so discouraged by individuals talking a different language. Simply because they can determine what is happening around them, they are able to better comprehend the scenery, activities, food along with other wonderful things that the country can offer, such as art and new music.

Finally, kids who speak more than just one tongue will have a good edge in the academe as well as in their professions. Schools and colleges may have a taste for pupils who can converse different tongues, so teaching a child early can increase his odds of getting into great universities. With regard to careers, alternatively, communicating in a different language opens up opportunities not just in one?s own land, but as well as abroad.

The mirror, not the scale, is the enemy of many this New Year's resolution time

Dec. 27, 2012 ? For years Blanca Ramirez, like many Americans, started each new year with a resolution to lose weight. But no more. "I lost 55 pounds this year and the weight is rolling off and will stay off," said the 42 year-old, married, mother of three. Ramirez underwent bariatric surgery at Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care in August and has lost 55 pounds in four months.

Losing weight and improving health are top New Year's resolutions expected to challenge Americans this year, experts say.

According to a study released in December, 2012, more than a quarter (27.8%) of Americans are obese. The United Health Foundation also reports that 30.8 % of American adults have high blood pressure.

"Losing weight has a positive effect on diabetes, heart disease, orthopaedic injuries, and even cancer," said Bipan Chand, MD, director, Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care, who performed Ramirez's gastric sleeve surgery. "Looking good is just one part of the weight- loss equation; adding years to your life is the real benefit."

Chand says there are many reasons that spur people to choose weight-loss surgery, from years of trying and failing to lose weight to experiencing a serious health scare. For Chicago-area resident Blanca Ramirez, it was her own reflection that spurred a decision to have a gastric-sleeve bariatric procedure. "I have been overweight since I was a teenager and I didn't like what I saw when I looked in the mirror," said Ramirez, who is 5 ft. 3 inches and weighed 225 pounds before her surgery in August. "People would tell me I was pretty and I didn't need to lose weight but I knew I was obese and was sick of being fat."

Diets, exercise programs, prescription pills, Ramirez says she tried everything from Atkins to Weight Watchers. The final straw was when poor health affected her family. "My brother had a heart attack at the age of 35. I already had cholesterol problems and I knew my weight would continue to cause more health problems," said the administrative secretary.

Ramirez attended a free weight loss information session offered by Loyola. "I liked what I heard about their program especially the nutritional counseling, exercise guidance and regular support groups," said Ramirez. "Loyola confirmed that my insurance would cover the procedure and that was the final green light to decide bariatric surgery was right for me."

Loyola offers medical as well as surgical weight-loss interventions, including laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

And Ramirez's resolution for 2013? "To help others win the battle of the bulge.People are always asking me my success and I tell them to attend a Loyola information session," she says. "I like looking at myself in the mirror now. I want others to lose weight and like what they see in the mirror, too."

(AP) ? The 18-year-old son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver says he has been treated for injuries after getting in "a little ski accident" in Idaho.

Patrick Schwarzenegger tweeted Saturday that he received stitches "down the back and but" (sic) after the accident, and he also thanked doctors who he said cared for him in Sun Valley.

He provided a link to a photo he posted to the social networking application Instagram, showing a deep cut on his lower back. He also said that he had been bruised in the accident, but did not provide details on how he got injured.

A spokesman for Shriver did not provide further details.

In 2006, Arnold Schwarzenegger broke his leg in a ski accident at Sun Valley while he was governor of California.

How Can I found Out When A Seller/Realtor Contract Ends Without ...

questions

Q: I know a particular Realtor who represents a house I?m interested in. And honestly, this is one negative, overbearing woman I don?t want to be involved with. She caused an accident I was in two months ago, and was OH so nasty even though it was her fault. And the answer is not using a buyer?s rep?she?d still find out who I am.

So, I?d like to find out when the contract ends, as I would consider buying the house when she was NOT around. How does one find out when a contract ends without talking to the Realtor, and feeling awkward asking this of the buyer, whom I don?t know at all?
?Nancy, Dallas, TX

A: Really there is no easy way. The people who know the date will likely not want to tell you. You could wait and see when it expires on the MLS, then approach the sellers directly.

Just get a buyer?s rep. Even if the listing agent knows who you are, they ethically and legally have to give a fiduciary duty to the seller. This duty does not include bad-mouthing or slandering the buyer. In fact, it would likely only make the listing agent look bad. Nowadays, you can buy a home without ever even seeing the listing agent, so if you want the home you should make the offer.
Adam Aguilar is a Realtor? with Reliantra in West Toluca Lake, CA.

A: Dear TX, find another real estate agent that you want to use and have them look up the property in the MLS. If the status is changed from ?pending? to ?active? then the property is back on the market.
Aram Shah is a Realtor? with Florida Capital Realty in Doral, FL.

A: A normal listing contract obligates the seller to notify the agent if anyone approaches them on the side and wants to buy the property. Most listing agreements also specify a time period after the listing contract ends during which any buyer who has a documented interest in the home prior to the listing contract ending, approaches the seller the selller is required to still pay the Realtor the commission.
Dale Weir is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker Gundaker in Chesterfield, MO.

A: You probably don?t want to hear this, but the agent, her broker and the seller are probably the only ones with that information. My recommendation is to speak with the listing agent?s broker or have your buyer?s agent speak with her broker. Most broker?s obviously are going to back up their agents, but they are not going to let personal issues get in the way of their customer?s best interest. Since it is in their seller?s best interest to get their property sold, I would think the listing agent?s broker would be willing to step in for her to close the transaction.

Other than trying that route, you may just have to wait it out and hope the listing expires without selling
David Welch is a Realtor? with RE/MAX 200 Realty in Winter Park, FL.

A: The best way to find out is to call her directly. You may consider having someone else call on your behalf. You can also call her broker or any other agent within that office should have access to this information.
Maria Jeantet is a Realtor? with Coldwell Banker C & C Properties in Redding, CA

Indifference in Post-Divorce Parenting | Persephone Magazine

I recently read the article ?Why I?m Glad My Ex Stopped Paying Child Support? and was intrigued to read that someone else shares my opinion on the child support conundrum. I have been harbouring the impression that I am a bit warped because after too many years on this road I don?t always agree with the prevailing thinking on how one is supposed to behave post-divorce when children are involved.?

Then, to compound the synchronistic trend of my recent reading material as I was flipping through the latest edition of O magazine I read the following sentence: ?The thing I got rid of and never missed? an ex-boyfriend.? Here, too, full understanding and empathy.

I did not marry young. I did not marry in haste (although there are moments when I?d like to pretend I did as an excuse for the aftermath). When I married I truly hoped that it would last forever. I will admit, I had a few nagging doubts but, as I?ve said recently, ?To err is human, to worry is a 21st century pastime,? and as such, having doubts was part of the natural order of making such a decision and commitment in one?s life. My son too was completely wanted and planned. There was no decision that we made that was not discussed and mutually agreed upon (or so I thought). The level of our communication would lead one to believe that we were on a solid path to marital harmony, if not bliss.

As most know though, it is possible to speak and say very little or nothing at all. By the time the end finally came we?d given up any pretense of communication and were existing in a silent, heavy truce. At the time, my son was almost two and I spent many a day trying to reconcile the situation I found myself in with the hopes and plans I?d had for my life and the reality, which was nigh unbearable. I can still recall actually taking out a calendar and doing the calculation to determine how long I?d have to stay married until my son turned 18 in an attempt to ?stay together for the sake of the child(ren).? The hardest decision was to acknowledge that the situation, no matter how I looked at it, was, in its current state a lose/lose equation. The only means of somehow reversing the existing trend was to end it and attempt to build a new foundation that could lead to harmony if not outright happiness.

In the years since, my ex-husband has waged his own personal war against me and, by extension, our son. I have read all of the well-meaning advice on how divorced parents should deal with each other ?for the sake of the children.? I?ve heard how important it is for the children of divorce to maintain contact with the absent parent as a means of ensuring their own sense of well-being and self-esteem. I have been told how important it is for my son to respect his absent father because respecting his father plays an integral role in the self-respect he will develop and hold for himself.

Sadly, his absent parent has not received that memo or perhaps he has decided not to read it because he?s determined that ?father knows best.? I say that tongue-in-cheek but, after sharing information that I hoped would improve our situation he actually said, ?I don?t need to read any of that stuff. I know all I need to know.? And so the untenable became sustainable.

It is pretty common knowledge that it is usually the single/divorced mother who bears the financial fall-out when marriages end both in terms of the oft compromised standard of living and the additional financial responsibilities that come from raising children alone. When the now absent parent sees it as their life mission to make that financial burden as hard is it is humanly possible for them to do, it leads to nothing but resentment and animosity. Usually at this point, all manner of logic is used to explain the mother?s behavior which may be completely and totally divorced from the reality of the situation.

I acknowledge that I am no saint, but I have tried. I have made sacrifices and decisions which can only be described as downright insane as I chased the elusive phantoms Peace and Harmony. I have accepted injustices because I thought, in the long run, it would be in the best interest of my son?s future development and his relationship with his absent parent.

I cannot, however, escape the thought that children growing up watching one parent consistently and methodically take advantage of another parent does not lead to: 1) a strong relationship with the other parent, nor 2) a better sense of self. Granted this is my couch psychology but, I cannot believe that a child growing up watching another parent being bullied is healthy either for their own individual development or for the relationships they will later have either with their own partners or their children.

The sweet twisted irony is that they don?t realize that every retributive action they take actually confirms the reasons why their relationship ended. As in the article I cited earlier, the support paying parent seems to be of the opinion that by using their support as a leverage they will somehow show the offending parent how powerful and needed they are when, in reality, the opposite is true. I know for a fact that my son?s absent parent tells people that he believes I haven?t gotten over him. He honestly seems to believe that after all that has transpired he could still be found attractive. Pardon?

What is not considered is that there comes a point when the money being paid to care for the child loses all tangible value and, conversely, you would rather forgo the monies to end the basis for the ongoing conflict. And therein lies yet another conundrum; what are we teaching our children when we effectively say, not all responsibility is created equal and you don?t have to be held accountable for your actions because, if you kick, scream and essentially make enough of a nuisance of yourself, you can be released from your obligations?

Prevailing theories on post-divorce child rearing seems to hew on the side of shielding the child from the truth and reality of the situation that caused the relationship to collapse and keeps the acrimony going. I fully agree that telling a child the intricate details on the collapse of a relationship is wrong; however, I am hard pressed to plausibly communicate that my child should respect a parent who is doing their level best to make his life as difficult and uncomfortable as he possible can? because he can. Children are not stupid; they know when they are being lied to.

A friend once admitted that he too had played the child support game with the mother of his children. Nickel and diming her for every cent simply because he could. He said it wasn?t until he finally asked himself what would he want for his children if they were living in his house full-time that he realized the futility of his actions and changed his behavior towards their mother. The irony, however, is by the time he had his epiphany he had so destroyed his relationship with her that it was already irreparable and his relationship to his children suffered correspondingly.

I myself am at the point that I would willingly PAY to legally end the child support payments as a means of ending the destructive dynamic at play. That willingness goes hand in hand with a desire to have nothing to do with my son?s absent parent. It is truly sad and unfortunate that a mechanism that is intended to keep the other parent involved in the lives of their children and maintain the relationship and bond that they had is what so often leads to the continuing acrimony that the couple was trying to end (at least that?s what I?d like to believe) when they ended their marriage in the first place.

I have a fair number of friends who have managed to eke out a functional relationship with their child?s absent parent. In each case though, the foundation of that relationship appears to be predicated on them turning a blind eye to the fact that the other parent is not supporting their children, on whatever level, as they should or as agreed. Meaning, the absent parent is getting a free pass, on some level, in exchange for a peaceful life.

I know there is no magic bullet to solving the dilemma of what happens to families when the core relationship ends, be it through divorce or an unmarried couple choosing to separate. What I have experienced is that the mechanisms that society has put in place to support families have been more destructive and can exacerbate an already difficult situation.

When the parent with whom the child lives gets to the point that they are willing to forego support for their child, the absent parent has not won, as I?m sure they would like to view it but rather they have lost and profoundly since, the hallmark of reaching that milestone is when there is a significant rupture in how the relationship as parents is viewed. To my mind, it is at this point that the emotional thread that connected them as parents snaps and, isn?t that precisely what was being preserved, the concept of these two people as a ?parental unit? for the child(ren)?

In the throes of divorce and rebuilding our lives, it is all too possible to forget that our children will only be children for a limited time. Hopefully the years they have after they become 18 will be many and it is those years that we should be focusing on. What will happen to them after they leave our homes? Have we provided them, within the context of a difficult situation, a foundation on which they can build happy, loving and productive lives and families of their own? I do fear that when the situation reaches a point of such exasperation that it leads to indifference and disengagement from one parent towards the other, it?s not a good place.

Mini battles and outright war are definitely not good, but is resignation or indifference really any better? On some level, I fear it may be worse.

'American Idol' Frontrunner Phillip Phillips Hospitalized

Singer, who suffers from kidney stones, was rushed to the ER on Thursday morning.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: FOX

There's no doubt that the atmosphere on "American Idol" is pressure cooker. But when you add pre-existing health problems into the mix it can get even more difficult for the finalists to make it to the stage twice a week.

According to TMZ, one of the leading contenders on this year's show, acoustic strummer Phillip Phillips, was rushed to a medical facility on Thursday morning for emergency treatment. Sources said Phillips, who suffers from kidney stones, was complaining of intense pain in his abdomen, but it is unclear what ailed him. TMZ claimed that someone close to Phillips suspected it could be gallstones.

Phillips's dad later reportedly told TMZ that his son has had 5 different procedures to remove kidney stones -- including one in January -- and that his boy is determined to stay in the competition, putting off any procedure for now. The Dave Matthews-esque footstomper was safely put through on Thursday night, when amiable Jeremy Rosado was sent home.

If Phillips does stick it out, he wouldn't be the first "Idol" favorite to battle illness on the show. Back in 2010, eventual runner-up Crystal Bowersox
 rebounded from a hospital stay
and thoughts of throwing in the towel, with one of that season's highlights.

Bowersox, a diabetic, was told that she would be eliminated from the show
if she didn't not make it to that week's performance.

A spokesperson for "Idol" could not be reached for comment at press time on Phillips' condition.

Why Apple Doesn't Need Google Maps Anymore [Apple]

The new version of iPhoto doesn't seem to use Google Maps for the map features in Journals and Slideshows. It's a small departure, sure, but it signals a much bigger play. Because thing is, Apple doesn't really need Google Maps anymore. And it's only a matter of time until it severs those ties completely. More »
